PET MICROCHIPPING

Each year millions of lost and abandoned animals are taken in by animal welfare organizations, only a small percentage are ever returned home. The major reason for failing to re-unite a lost pet with its owner is because the pets are unidentifiable. Collars and tags may be removed or get lost and tattooing can become illegible over time.

Microchipping offers pet owners the only truly permanent method of identifying your pet and linking the animal back to you, the owner, and greatly improves your pet's chances of getting back home.

Microchipping uses Radio Frequency (RFID) technology and cannot be tampered with, fade or be removed. The chip is normally deposited into the scapula, an area between the shoulder blades. The pre-packed sterile needle houses the microchip which is not much larger than a grain of rice but is also passive and needs no power or battery to send your details to a microchip reader. As the chip is inert, your pet's body won't reject it. Your pet should feel no more discomfort from a microchip implant than from a conventional injection.

The PeddyMark microchip I use is manufactured by AEG, one of Europe's largest companies, and complies to ISO 11784 and ISO 11785. I now have the mini-microchips, much smaller than the originals and ideal for animals who won't exceed 15kg in weight.

Your pet's details will be registered on Animal Tracker Database. The Animal Tracker database is fully compliant with current legislation relating to registration and record keeping for dogs. Animal Tracker operates a 24 hour telephone number for lost and found pets which is manned 365 days a year. All of our microchip registrations include Scanner Angel integration, which sends your pet’s microchip number to its network of scanners alerting the operator if your lost pet is found and scanned.

It has been announced that from 6th April 2016 every owner in England will have to have their dog microchipped by law. According to the government, owners who don't comply risk facing fines of up to £500.

Animal charities such as Dogs Trust have welcomed the news in the hope that more lost pets will be able to be returned to their owners rather than ending up in rehoming shelters such as theirs.

In 2011 126,176 stray dogs were picked up by dog wardens and other welfare organisations. Of these, 31% were reunited as a result of being microchipped and a further 6% thanks to their collar tag. Microchips offer a more permanent way of making sure your pet is always identifiable and that you can always be contacted in the event of them being found.

Dog rescue centres, dog wardens and vets scan every stray or unidentified dog brought into their possession. Your details are kept on a central computer; resulting in a quick and happy reunion should your dog become lost. You just need to make sure that if you ever change your telephone number or move house that you update your registration information - details of how to do this will be sent with your registration certificate.
